Policy

Bord na Móna‘s bogs are owned by Bord na Móna p.l.c, in order to ensure the longterm commitment of the Group to best environmental practice. However, peat is produced for most of Bord na Móna‘s needs, including horticulture, by Bord na Móna Energy Limited, so operational environmental management responsibility rests with the trading company.

Bord na Móna Energy Limited seeks to conduct all aspects of its business in an environmentally sensitive manner. It is committed to the compilation of information on all aspects of its impact on the environment, and making this information available to the public.

The company has established an environmental management system, which specifically addresses the following impacts:

  • Discharges to water
  • Emissions to atmosphere
  • Waste disposal
  • Noise, vibration, odour, dust and visual effects
  • Use of natural resources
  • Natural environment and ecosystem effects

The environmental management system will be monitored and continually improved. A system of regular environmental audits has been established, and the company will continue to invest in research into its impact on the natural environment.

Bord na Móna Energy Limited recognises the importance of peatland conservation and the maintenance of habitat diversity. The company will ensure that the reuse of its peatlands will create either an economically or socially integrated resource with a high environmental value.
