Laboratory Capabilities

Bord na Móna's extensive testing capabilities are designed to meet customer requirements and reflect standard regulatory requirements. The analytical service laboratory has a wide range of sophisticated analytical instrumentation offering state of the art technology used in the analysis of waters, wastes, soils, sludges and air samples.

The laboratory offers a broad range of analytical techniques and test methods regularly used in environmental monitoring. Classical wet chemistry techniques such as BOD, COD, OFG and suspended solids measurements are used in assessing effluent quality, both pre and post-treatment prior to discharge. Ion chromatography, atomic absorption spectrometry and ICP-MS are used in determining major cation and anion levels, which are used as precursor to ion balance determination in assessing groundwater quality.

A range of gas chromatography systems coupled with both FID and MS detection systems allow quantification of organic components in air, water, soil with trace level organics being determined by headspace GC-MS. True heavy metal analysis in a wide range of matrices from soils through to effluents and drinking waters are determined using both AAS and ICP-MS.

Bord na Móna Environmental Ltd's unique position as Ireland's only commercial olfactometry laboratory facilitates the accurate determination of odour concentrations in ambient air samples.
